Carnival, an event every Anguillian and in the know visitor has penciled in their diary. Carnival in Anguilla is one of those things that is quite hard to describe as it is a concoction of so many things somehow limited to a two week period normally around the last week of July to second week of August. Find out how to get to Anguilla.
Soca, calypso, dancehall and reggae are the most common genres you will hear however you do get the odd pop and house song to keep things interesting. Anguillians are passionate about their locally grown bands like Pantha Vibes, Exodus Band and De Movements Band who compete with each other for the title of Carnival band of the year. There main competitive event Band clash is where the bands compete and are supported by their loyal fan base. This isn't one to miss as these shows not only entertain with rythmic Caribbean tunes but can also watch the on stage drama where bands try to out do each other with over the top performances.
Carnival is also a big period for Anguilla's favourite sport Boat Race. There are always a few races scheduled during the 2 weeks. They usually start and end at Sandy Ground or Meads Bay with Champion of Champions race being the biggest race. These boats are hand made wooden sail boats built for speed containing roughly a 20 person crew using their body weight to help turn the boat and a captain skillfully adjusting the sails to capture any slight breeze to gain the advantage.
There are also other events like Youth Calypso where junior Calypsonians take to the stage and pageant shows like Miss Tiny Tott and Miss Anguilla. These other events are always good fun to go to as they always tend to reveal more and more of the culture of the island.
The Food during carnival in Anguilla is generally home cooked Caribbean food served from an endless number of pop up food stalls and vans that are always a few steps away at all events. These are great places to fill up after a party to soak up the alcohol or to grab a couple beers before.
August Monday is one of the Caribbean's biggest beach parties and for Anguilla represents the pinnacle of the festivities. August Monday kicks off with a early morning street party called Jourvert morning which goes from the capital The Valley all the way to Sandy Ground beach. Later in the afternoon Sandy Ground beach turns into a massive beach party with top class performers from the Caribbean and gets attended by people from all over the world.
